The Quill Awards: A People’s Choice for Books

There’s a new award show in town.  The Quill Award celebrates “the written word.”  Though a number of established book awards are determined by critics, the winners of the Quill will be determined by average, everyday readers.  Winners will be announced at the October 11th Quill Awards in New York.  NBC plans to broadcast the event on Saturday, October 22. The award, as well as the Quills literacy foundation were created with the support of Reed Business Information, Publishers Weekly’s parent organization.

The award will recognize “books released in the U.S between August 1, 2004 and July 31, 2005; that had received starred reviews or had appeared on national bestseller lists during the year. Next, an invited group of booksellers and librarians who made up the Nominating Board voted for their favorites, yielding five top titles in each of nineteen categories.
